NZFW2017 – KATE SYLVESTER

Inspired by Ridley Scott’s iconic 80’s film Blade Runner, Kate Sylvester’s autumn/winter 18 collection was superb to say the least.

Amidst an LED wall to floor backdrop of coloured light strips the models emerged.

Cleverly infused with textured repeat patterns, metallic weave and sheath knit fabrics, the collection exudes 80’s electro chic. And in Kate’s own words, “it’s about gorgeous colour, classic pieces and making them feel new and contemporary.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

And once again I’m a shooter not a writer so I’ll let my images do the talking.

Kate Sylvester talks about the themes behind this collection here.

NZFW2017 – FEDERATION +

New Zealand Fashion Week 2017 – The Federation Show

I was especially excited to shoot the Federation show ‘Gentle Savages’, especially having shot a fair bit of their previous collections for a local store here in Nelson.

I knew roughly what I would be seeing, refined streetwear and casual stuffs with a dash dose of brand placement here and there. Fed definitely didn’t disappoint! The current trend of smartening up the street look was evident throughout. Activewear was cleverly blended with dressy winter coats and denim.

Knits & lion motifs caught my eye in scarlet and mustard as well as some rad white socks!

Near the end we were treated with a solid rap performance up and down the runway by local hiphop artist, Kings supported by DJ Dan Aux. Solid beats yo.

Looking forward to seeing it hit the stores!

Enjoy.

NZFW2017 – ANDREA MOORE

I don’t even know how to write a fashion blog post but here goes.

My own personal knowledge of Andrea Moore is vague at best, AND being an NZFW newbie I was just stoked to be there and shoot some gigabytes, soak up the atmosphere and make some connectionz. I really had no idea what I was in for soooo expect the unexpected right?

Andrea Moore kicked off with dimmed lights and a visual feast of festoon light curtains hung from the ceiling at different angles down the runway. All of us shooters were busy trying to figure out how to shoot the pieces as they came out and we collectively agreed that long shots weren’t going to work. As cool as the festoon lights were, they were going to be tricky to work with.

We needn’t have worried however as the opening set had ballet dancers move deliberately slowly and gracefully, picking their way through the curtains fully decked out in Andrea Moore active wear. An absolute treat to see active wear promoted and displayed like this. Not sure if the male danseur’s were in womens 3/4 leggings or not. Didn’t matter. They pretty much stole the show before it began!

Enter the main pieces and it was clear to see floral prints playing a major part in this season’s range, not OTT gaudy prints either. Colours well complimented and a bigger emphasis on broadleaf and bloom rather than bright pops of colour.

Throughout the range there were dashes of bright mustard and red, forest greens with a semi camo/leopard print and some absolutely magnificent burgundy pieces too (faves).

On another note – it was both heart warming & fantastic to see Andrea Moore loyal to the Gasteiger twins, Chiara & Norina with a walk this year. The girls endured an incredible and undeserved amount of body shaming for their work in last years campaign and it was great to see them doing what they love.

Can’t wait to see what’s next for the AM team!

Christchurch Shoot Trip

Wild Opulence – styled shoot for Together Journal

The Wild Opulence shoot came together fairly quickly earlier this year and we were blessed to have new wedding style magazine, Together Journal, feature it in their magnificent Issue Four.

Guided by shoot stylist, Samantha Gerard of Balencia Lane and with lush autumn florals and greenery from Karen Grey at Perfect Style we set about shooting this stunning evening scene in an orchard under the hills of Motueka, New Zealand.

A stunning dress from Rue de Seine was on display and perfectly complimented by some gorgeous bridesmaid gowns by ViCTOR Bridesmaid, even the horses got involved!

Michaela McBride Calligraphy created some beautiful stationary, jewellery was supplied by Zoe & Morgan and the florals were bound with  some plant dyed silk ribbons from Feathers And Stone.

Dear Indie

So great to have White Mag feature Wild Hearts again.

Set at Mahana’s opulent contemporary house and vineyard – the shoot was the perfect mix of lace and strong visuals. My kinda theme! Can’t get enough of all the hard edges and lines in that home!!!

Incredible.

So sit back and take a look at my short film, ‘Dear Indie’, part 1 as well as a few behind the scenes snaps too 😉

Papercut Patterns Shoot

A few months ago Katie from Papercut Patterns approached me to shoot her new range.

Katie designs and makes clothing patterns which are then boxed and sold for you to make yourself! Brilliant.

With the CHAMELEON theme decided and all the garments ready we set about shooting the lookbook studio shots and then it was time for the location shoot.

As the theme for the new range was ‘Chameleon’, it was agreed that the editorial shoot should have the garments subtly blend into the surroundings without being completely invisible. It took a while to find the perfect all-in-one location to fit the various colours and textures but after a lot of hunting we decided on the beautiful gardens of the Garwood property (thanks Sean & Ligliana!).

The gardens featured a wide variety of natives and introduced fauna as well as a giant (protected) gum tree! Perfect for our purposes 😉

Of note is the perfect little natural amphitheatre filled with birch trees and fallen leaves – absolutely ideal for the long Waver jacket look!

Hope you enjoy making and creating these. See below for the final results as they appear on the Papercut website as well as editorial and behind the scenes images.
